Markus Rock presents his solo show The Flood at BBA Gallery as part of the Monat der Fotografie OFF-Berlin.

The photo series “The Flood” was taken in summer 2021 shortly before and during the flood of the century in the German Aartal. Although the title of the series and the period in which it was created suggest that the the series primarily examines the ecological threat and its consequences, the theme of joie de vivre takes center stage.

Water as an element is life-giving, but at the same time it can kill us. We can swim and play in it one moment and drown in it the next. The idea of mixing threatening motifs and elements with joyful images and to mix them equally in vivid, contrasting colors, is aimed at motivating joie de vivre and to defy the threat we have to face.
